And All That Is Within Me…

(Psalm 103:1-22) Some folk condemn certain types of worship as ’emotionalism’. But even if that’s all a public, emphatic celebration of God’s goodness is, what’s wrong with that? When did excitement and passion become a bad thing?

There’s nothing wrong with ’emotionalism’- when you’re hopping around your living room because a guy on TV threw a ball and another guy caught it. Nobody condemns you for crying at a funeral, or a wedding. Cheering at a graduation, shouting at a rally. But cry out to God in a worship service- and smug, Christian intelectualites and atheists alike- start rolling their eyes and sucking their teeth, because you’re being ’emotional’.

But the simple reality is, in many cases, we get worked up about the things that mean the most to us. Call it what you want- but if your heart never races in a worship service when you think about how awesome your God is, but you’ve nearly done a backflip over a touchdown- then football is tangibly more essential to your being, then God is.

David said ‘Bless the Lord, oh my soul- AND ALL that is within me’. That includes my intellect, my extremeties, my finances, my time, my attention. But also, my adrenaline. My endorphins. My blood vessels. Capillaries.

Stop knocking saints who go all in.
